Vote? Or Not?

Let’s see, my choices are one group who wants to take more of my hard-earned money or another group who wants to tell me how I can spend what’s left of my money. Hmmmmm, the lesser of two evils. Hmmmm, that’s still a vote for evil, isn’t it? Sorry, but there’s enough wickedness in the world without my vote giving tacit validation to those choices.

What? I can’t complain if I don’t vote?! If you’re walking down a street and a mugger gives you the choice of being shot or stabbed, you’ve got every right to complain about your injuries when you pick neither. Of course, an election is different than a mugging. There’s a lot more smiling and deception involved. Still, if you vote, knowing full well the consequences that will be unleashed on the lives and property of everyone, you the one who can’t complain now, can you…

What The Democrats and Republican Tickets Have In Common

With the addition of Sarah Palin to the republican ballot, both parties now have a lot more in common. With either ticket, people can be assured of voting for two boobs …

What Are Your Election Choices?

On one side of the political spectrum, you have an African American and a Catholic. On the other side, you have an advanced AARP member and an Alaskan American woman. It’s a battle of the minority groups, folks! So what is a white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant man going to do? I don’t know. Not only am I not a W.A.S.P., none of this really applies to me. No matter how hard both parties make this election about looks, family history, genetic tans, and religious beliefs, this process is about deeds — what these people have and have not done as politicians. That’s what really matters and affects me … and you!

Actually your election choice could be quite simple. Maybe you enjoy having someone else pay for your mistakes. Maybe you enjoy having more and more of your hard earned income taken from you. Then don’t fear. You have the perfect party that is more than happy to accommodate your desires. Maybe you enjoy being told how to live your life. Maybe you prefer someone telling you what you can and cannot do with what’s left of your money. Again, there is a political party ready and willing help you very well.

But what about the rest of us citizens who want to live responsible lives? What about the rest of us who don’t want be a slave nor want to enslave our fellow citizens through the democratic process? We’re stuck in choosing the lesser of two evils. Unfortunately, that is still a vote for evil. It’s kind of like having to choose between being stabbed and being shot. Either way you’re going to hurt. The mistake here is believing that you can’t complain if you don’t choose. Yet this is the myth used to guilt you into voting. It works whenever you ignore the fact that, anytime anyone threatens your life or takes from you what is not theirs, you have every right to complain!

This all applies to our upcoming election. The ones who CAN’T complain are those who DO vote. They give their implicit consent to whatever harm the political process brings about. They silently condone whatever thievery and loss of freedom the politicians enact. For the rest of us who believe in being paid for honest work, believe in the charity of helping others because we can and not because of coercion, believe in a healthy respect for differing beliefs that aren’t imposed on us or on others, our election decision is an easy one: to write in “None of the Above” or don’t vote at all. Either way, we have the right to complain and to do so loudly.

Of course, I know enough to realize that this act of defiance won’t change a thing. After all, we are the only real minority that matters — the responsible individual. It takes a majority of fed-up slaves to enact real change. Remember what happened to the Soviet Union, the former Soviet Union? For now, it looks like we’ll have to put up with the same-old practices mouthed as “change” by this year’s bumper crop of candidates. I know our elected officials will make the right decisions but only after they’ve enacted all other possibilities. Heaven help us all …

Has Someone Hijacked Your Blog?

After the adventure that I had during my last upgrade to WordPress 2.2.1, I *was* going to bypass version 2.2.2 and just wait for September’s release of 2.3. And then I read about one blogger who had his blog hijacked, robbing him of all of his site’s traffic. If you’re depending upon your blog for income, you can imagine what a financial blow this can be. The good news is that he managed to figure the how and why. Still, his post about this thievery reads like a detective novel and has me reconsidering the security upgrade in WordPress’ 2.2.2. ::: sigh ::: Maintaining a blog shouldn’t be this difficult…

WordPress Upgrade Path

After yesterday’s adventure in update to the newly secured WordPress 2.2.1, I was curious about when new versions would be coming out. According to the official WP Roadmap site, version 2.2 may be released in the middle of July and 2.3 in mid-August. I was planning on waiting for version 2.3 but there are some serious security bugs fixed by version 2.2.1.

If you need to update your WordPress, here is the upgrade instructions. In a nut shell, there are five steps:

    1) Basically backing up your database files. I also copied all of the files related to my blog to my home computer as part of the backup.

    2) Deactivate ALL of the plug-ins. At this point, I went ahead and logged out of my WordPress admin. I remained logged into my Bluehost account so that I could work with the files. I also have a file called iron.html . I rename it to index.html and this will show up instead of my blog. It announces to my visitors that I’m in the process of upgrade (or in the case yesterday, having technical difficulties) and to come back later. Just a courtesy. If you would have visited yesterday, you would have been greeted with this.

    3) Replace all files that are listed in the upgrade process. One thing that the process doesn’t mention is deleting wp-content\themes\classic and wp-content\themes\default directories, and then adding the newer versions of those directories that come in the WordPress update ZIP file.

    4) Run the wp-admin/upgrade.php file from your browser’s address bar (as in http://yourBlogNameAddress/wp-admin/upgrade.php).

    5) I then log back into my site’s admin page. After renaming index.html to index.htm_ , I then open my blog site in another window as a visitor. This way, as I activate each plug-in ONE AT A TIME, I can refresh my visitor window to make sure nothing crashes.

Anyway, the instructions are much clearer than I have briefly written here. I just wanted to make notes for future reference. I hope that this helps both of us! :D

OH GREAT! Upgrade hell…

I’ve finally finished a three hour struggle with the WordPress upgrade to 2.2.1 and now … I’ve lost my sidebar and footer, comments don’t work, some posts show up as ’500 internal error’, arrrgggghhhh! ,So for now, all my plugins are turned off including the do-follow. Sorry… Any one with any helpful thoughts?

UPDATE: hour #4.5 Do you have your blog on Bluehost? Are you thinking about using Bluehost’s new “Fast CGI for PHP” feature? That was the source of my headache. I had enabled this feature and then began my upgrade. After I finished, that’s when trouble began. A couple of minutes online with Bluehost support (always excellent) and they told me to turn it off. TA-DA! I’m back in business.

The only thing that bothers me right now is that my version number hasn’t changed to 2.2.1. It still shows 2.1.2. And the widgets aren’t working without help from “Sidebar widget” plug-in. I’m pretty sure that I’ve updating everything — since I no longer have that helpful post preview window any more and I have an option to disable all plugins with a single checkbox. hmmmmm…. Oh wait! Now my site is complaining about an error in the function.php file dealing with smileys icons. Smileys? Yeah, I’m having a hard time smiling myself…

UPDATE #2: hour #6 The reason the version never advanced is because the files in the wp-include directory didn’t update properly. There was the source of the smiley problem as well. So I’ve reloaded every file into my Bluehost directory. Now version is correct and the automatic display of widgets is functioning. Now let’s see what happens….

WordPress Upgrade

If you stop by next few days and find my site displaying a rotating “under construction” picture, please do not fret. WordPress has recently released a 2.2 version of its blogging software. And it has too many goodies for me to not take advantage of upgrading this blog.

The upgrade process is not difficult, just tedious. Basically, you just make a backup copy of your site (which is something you should be doing on a regular basis anyways), make a backup copy of your database files (again, something you should be doing), inactivate all of your plug-ins, delete certain old version WordPress files, install new version WordPress files, run an upgrade program, reactivate all of your plug-ins, and finally make sure everything on your site works. What did I tell you! A simple walk in the park! I guess you can see why I have been putting off installing the 2.1.3 version. With my luck, WordPress would came out with 2.1.4 within hours of my upgrade, followed by 2.1.5 within minutes of that version.

Hopefully, once I do this, this will mean that I am back to blogging on all my sites on a regular basis. Things have been a bit busy around here these past few weeks. I am hoping that I and through that and will have some free time once again. I have several half-baked posts about some very interesting technological gadgets and advancements for your reading pleasure. So stay tuned! And thank you for your support!
