What To Do About Comments?
Lately you have been leaving a lot more comments. This commentary surge has made my blogging experience that much more rewarding. I thank you very much for taking time to sharing your encouraging, often engaging thoughts. As a result, I have started replying to your messages with comments of my own as I get the chance. But this raises a couple of questions that I want to put to you.
Would you prefer that I send my remarks to you in an e-mail? I ask this because I am also leaving more comments now. Some of those are in the form of questions. Yet I’m finding that I’m losing track of which blogs and forums that I left my questions at. Fortunately, a few blogs will send me notification when additional comments are left. In that way, I can then catch when the owner of the blog has replied to my writings. A couple of other bloggers have replied directly to me which has been very helpful. For that matter, perhaps you would enjoy both a reply comment at the post and an e-mail.
Maybe you could care less if I acknowledge your effort or not. For me, I’m wondering if there is some proper blogging etiquette to let you know that I appreciate the time you took to share your valuable thoughts with me. Whatever the case, I hope that you will let me know your thoughts about this.

I comment both on my blog and in an email to the people who leave me comments. You can get into some great discussions.
Thanks, Lisa. Have you ever had a discussion get out-of-hand?
I use Owen’s comment responder. That way the commenter gets an email, and other commenters know I’m willing to interact with my readers. I love me some comments! Even if I do end up a week behind in responding to them.
I think having the option to be notified by email of followup comments is good enough so that the commenter can subscribe to it if he wants to be alerted of replies.
I have yet to implement this on my own blog
Hello Cass and Cyberpartygal! Ok, I’ve added Owen’s comment responder on Friday and today is the first chance that I’ve had to respond. Did you both get this reply to your comments via email? If you get the chance, please let me know.
Hi Ron,
Yup, I got an email notification via email. I’m gonna install Owen’s plug-in as well.
I run MT so of course can’t use Owen’s utility but MT has a setting that will let it send an email to me every time that someone comments. I finally enabled that a few weeks ago and it’s one of the best things that I have done in awhile. I am starting to respond more to comments, both via email and on the blog.
I am finding that the participation level from both myself and others is much greater.
Hello Richard, I’ve been reading your excellent blog for a few months now and look forward to commenting soon. What was it that motivated you to use MT over the other blogging programs available?
It is the first one that I found
Actually other than a couple that were in beta testing Movabletype was the biggest one around at that point. WP was pretty much a blip on the horizon and all of the bigger bloggers were either using hand-coded software or MT.
I still prefer it to WP, and have tested both pretty extensively. I have had a few problems here and there, most noticeably during the last nine months, but the benefits of the extensibility outway the bad parts to me.
I only wish I were better at coding with PHP and Perl, cause I could do some killer stuff with my site. I used to be able to write a bit of perlscript when I first started out in the late nineties, but have forgotten most of it.
Very interesting site, nice design, greetings
