Songs of Silence

Internet Radio has become very popular. So popular that you might not hear your favorite Internet station today. That silence you hear is a protest of the ridiculous hike in royalty fees that go into effect on July 15th. Not only will the fees go from 0.007 cents per song per listener to 0.019 cents, but they will be retroactive to January of 2006. In other words, a few tens of millions of dollars — enough that several stations will be forced off the air.

Hopefully, the musicians will get a little of this booty. But the ones raking in the money are the Record companies. Their greed could hurt the very artists that pay their salaries.

So if your favorite Internet is silent today, now you know why … or they just might be playing the greatest hits of that famous mime, Marcel Marceau.
